Take a Break Larry. We can still reach our destination.

The first line of the news story off the AJC.com website said it all,

Larry Munson, the legendary voice of University of Georgia football, suddenly retired Monday.”

I have grown up on hearing Larry calling the play by play action of Georgia Football. Now, I and the Bulldawg Nation face a future without Larry. Excuse me, I shed a tear or two over this announcement. Larry, we will miss you.

Here are some of my favorite calls from Larry.

What the hell just happened?

UGA mens basketball team was 4-12 in SEC play during the regular season. Yet, during the last three days, they have won four games in a row, three of them in two days, won the SEC Basketball Tournament, and got a birth in the NCAA Tournament. I am still in shock, but I am very ecstatic. March Madness is alive and well in Georgia. I cannot wait to see when UGA plays on Thursday or Friday.

You cannot spell Sugar without UGA.

UGA 41 Rainbow Fairy Elves 10

Hawaii was so overrated. To paraphrase Dio, they were just a rainbow in the dark.

It has been a while . . .

Wow, times flies when it is the end of the year and when you are having fun. So, let’s catch up.

Winning a criminal trial is exhilarating and doubly so, when it is an armed robbery trial. As a public defender, you are expected to lose. In fact, you lose a lot of your cases, because the evidence is so overwhelming against your clients. So, when you win a case of such magnitude, it energizes your entire being and gives you the faith to push on and fight another day. It is sort of like when Appalachian State beat Michigan or Stanford beat USC, it gives you the belief that you can fight and you can win, despite the odds.

UGA 31 GT 17 – Watching this game was fun. I had a couple of Tech fans talking trash to me before the game. As the game progressed, I held up seven fingers and I never saw fans of the North Ave. trade school get so mad. Seven years in a row. God, I will miss Reggie and Chan. Now, so, Taylor Bennett is going to have to run the triple option next year. Eight years in a row sounds damn nice. Cannot wait to then.

The BCS is full of shit. Last year, certain people were advocating that Michigan go to the title game, even though they did not win their conference. But, UGA ain’t good enough to go, even though they did not win their conference? Hey, can you name the one top 25 team that Ohio State played? That’s right kids, it was Illinois. And what happened? Ohio State lost. But they are in the game. LSU loses both times when they were #1. Yes, Les Miles, LSU did not lose in regulation this year, but it should say something when the #1 team cannot win in regulation against UNRANKED TEAMS.

UGA v. Hawaii – expect for the next few weeks the sports media gush over this team and hope that they beat the big, bad, ungrateful team from Athens. Screw that shit. I remember the 3rd best offense in College Football last year coming into Athens this year and only scored 14 points. Hell, the last WAC team that UGA played could not get more than 14 points on us. UGA is going to win. Period.

The office Christmas party was fun. My date, HyperMediocrity was stunning. I am lucky to have her as a friend. The food was wonderful. It is good to know that at 35, I can outlast my co-workers. Plus, I may look like an idiot, but I enjoyed dancing again.

A wonderful drunken rambling post

January 1, 2006 donzell Leave a comment

I am attempting to write this during a wonderful drunken haze. So, if I tend to ramble, then get over it. You are reading this dribble for a reason. Hang on, we are going on in.

First, the call that I was hearing was not to leave this site or to leave my friends, in general. It was a call to acknowledge what I truly am: an outsider. I will never fit in to any social strata. It is not that I am some revolutionary that wants to raze the current social order and replace it with an utopia. I am a person that seeks harmony and frankly, I cannot find it within any societal arrangement. I find it when I am on the move. Despite the Italian liquor, the PBR, or the other intoxicating beverages in my gullet, I was at peace when I was driving from Athens on Ga. Hwy 316 to my home in Dacula. To quote a juvenile judge that I practiced in front of for two years, I have “rabbit blood” in my veins.

Second, I love Athens. While I was born in Lawrenceville, attended school in Snellville, and went to church in Loganville, I have never found a place where I have belonged or felt an sense of belonging than I have felt in Athens. It is not because I am an avid UGA fan. Even during the years I have left the territorial area of the city of Athens, I have felt an calling to return to her like a Muslim feels the calling to visit Mecca. While I walked from the Road House to my car at the parking deck at the Athens-Clarke County Courthouse around 2 am on New Year’s Day, I had a number of strangers complent me on my winter coat, on my manner of dress, and to tell me “Happy New Year.” Even if most of these comments had their roots in the inebriating effects of the drink of the barley, it shows that Athens is a town that is accepting of all that come to it, including a self-doubting, paranoid, soul like me.

Third, 2005 was kind to me. I was able to rethink the reason why I became an attorney and ascertain my calling. Despite the detour through bankruptcy law, I found the confidence to go forth and be a warrior poet and to defend those charged with the indefensible and be victorious. Also, I found the courage to feel passion and to act on such passion. While a source of my passion has left me to seek her dreams elsewhere, I am grateful that I was able to spend even a fleeting moment with her.

Lastly, as I stand on New Year’s Day and with 2006 in front of me, I find myself like an adventurer that stands before a vast and unexplored land. I know that the land is fret with danger and perils that may threaten my health, wealth and life. However, I am anxious to explore this new land and find the treasures that this land may hold to its bosom and to revel in its natural beauty. I hope that you are willing to come and take this journey with me. If not, do not mourn me or forget me, think I am gone and wait for thee, for we shall meet again. While the water is wide and nor do I have wings to fly, I will have a boat for you and you and I will row together.

Your friendly neighborhood public defender,
Donzell
